This February newsletter is packed with news updates of activities taken by Greenpeace supporters and volunteers across Africa. The highlight is of course the United Nations Environment Assembly happening this week. Let’s get started!
UNEA MEETING THIS WEEK

For the first time in history, this week, a global plastics treaty to tackle the plastic crisis is one of the top priorities during the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya. Greenpeace Africa calls on all UN Member States <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXGV5nCW9V3Zsc37CgWRMVlD8P88mqz99W7wlBx93c5HQCW8BrdQW3L9gZqW4QfcNY8XsZK6W5rm_y14HcJ91W3nTf2r77PfyHN6f6H893m…> to support the most comprehensive draft resolution and to adopt further measures to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all.

A strong global treaty means keeping oil and gas in the ground. It means big brands switching to refill and reuse systems, working in solidarity with frontline communities, and better air and climate. It will ensure compliance from governments and industry and hold countries accountable for managing their waste and end waste colonialism. Corporations and big brands need to join hands and support a mandate for a legally binding Global Plastics Treaty addressing the full lifecycle of plastics. <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXHt5nCWNV3Zsc37CgJ9rW6NfVdC5VjS86W1C9wwf1cZMDvW2F-6XZ3KgMd6VWtRQ81-0ZSJW7jT9TS9dbWJnW8s06rz10DqDPW5fpzp53Z…>

MUST SEE – BELIEVER’S GARDEN
A must-see is the Believer’s Garden Documentary that follows founder Evans “Transformer” Otieno, who created a garden that doubles as a library and recreational space for his community. With his innovative efforts, Evans has managed to bring the community closer. To help resolve the dumping problem, he uses reclaimed plastic, rubber, and plants more trees to mitigate the harmful effects of burning waste at the Dandora dumpsite. MANTASHE IS NOT OVER SHELL

Remember when we celebrated a momentous victory when the Makhanda High Court in Grahamstown ordered Shell to cease their seismic blasting along the Wild Coast? Well, it wasn’t long before Gwede Mantashe started lashing out at civil society for exercising their right to campaign against Shell’s project. This wasn’t just another campaign against an oil company planning to wreak ecological havoc and assault the human right to a healthy environment. This was a community-driven push closing the door on any other fossil fuel company that may want to march in behind Shell to cause further environmental chaos.

Minister Mantashe’s decision to switch sides and pledge his allegiance to big business is a big mistake. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa should not allow the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy Minister to threaten communities and civil society organisations. We will keep our eyes on the department, read more here <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXF_5nCVhV3Zsc37CgVhVW8p0xCL7txPzLF7VqD_kZQRbW18LsFv17dTM-L6kqJdfkv-V73lkB3q5sMsW6bJn4Q4TMQ3sV-LvnQ7sXCTMW3…> and please add your name to our petition for climate action. *Demand climate justice now, sign the petition* <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXGB5nCVVV3Zsc37CgG-yW2nMnM91zQTMxW8kXwws1t4Zd8VJ8YKk4rNPhVW5xSL_-6YlHwHW82x4XV6SzjBdW6MbHZJ5Y9VgqW4k-FBh29…>

ONE STEP FORWARD, TEN STEPS BACK

Cameroun Vert SARL (Camvert) has just obtained tax exemptions <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXF_5nCVhV3Zsc37CgHPvVmy__89hrGmyW1D5RFR39s_HqN1Nc7txz3kf3W6TgdFy6sqyTfVCXMpl8C2l4zN5xkRmP5-0_2W3rjkYg3Qr2m…> from the Cameroonian government for its oil palm plantation project in the south region of Cameroon. So to operate, the company will not need to pay certain taxes.

Camvert, owned by Cameroonian businessman Aboubakar Al Fatih has signed an agreement with the Investment Promotion Agency (API) allowing it to benefit from the provisions of the 2013 law on incentives for private investment in Cameroon. This regulatory text grants project holders tax and customs exemptions ranging from 5 to 10 years, both during the construction and production.

The tax exemption by the government is a contradiction of the current context in Cameroon, especially for a company that has so far presented itself as one of the doors of salvation for the Cameroonian economy. In December 2021, Greenpeace Africa and its partner GDA published a report that exposed the disastrous effects of Camvert’s operations on the lives of the local population, the forests, and biodiversity. Read the report here <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXF_5nCVhV3Zsc37CgB3LN21LRGNJqbTqW1SKmsZ5HF_cnW7BSRX52_Cz9JW2x3y5D4LTTtFW1W34Jf1Qrtk5W8FDq-65ywgdnW6pZnqc6w…> and stand with communities in Cameroon against Camvert. *Save the Congo Basin forest* <mail.greenpeaceafrica.org/e3t/Btc/ZU+113/d11bVy04/MWfTxdVr-rbW2wqwCm3hmg_2W2lg-cV4G87rMN93kXFp5nCTJV3Zsc37CgHyzW6V0N-53b6Q9lW98HBgz68KKMMW5yWKYf6grlMMW5ZcYkv3Y6p-YW96kwdw5xbhBgW8Nnqtl7P092rW1rkmd38…>
THE NEW AFRICAN UNION CHAIR

Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, was made the new African Union chair for 2022. Although he briefly mentioned protecting the environment in a list of the “many and pressing” challenges facing the continent – we believe this is his chance to seize the opportunity to unify the continent on climate action.

President Sall has to make climate action a priority of his tenure, at a time when the African continent faces climate and biodiversity crisis, and when many governments continue to ignore looming catastrophe. COMING UP

We’re looking forward to celebrating International Women’s Day with women all over the world, but especially those fighting to protect our ocean and food security. Globally, one billion people rely on fish as their main source of animal protein, according to the UN World Health Organization (WHO). In some small island states, people meet their protein needs exclusively from seafood.

In a country like Senegal in West Africa for instance, fish cover 70% of the population’s animal protein intake. For years, women in the West African region, alongside small-scale fishermen, have been pushing back on a booming fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO) industry and an unknown number of destructive foreign fishing vessels taking away the fish, which the local communities depend on. Look out for more news updates as we gear up for this monumental day.
