The South African National Energy Association (SANEA) will be holding an Action for Energy dialogue on 23 February 2017 at the Sandton Convention Centre to address the 2016 Draft Integrated
Resource Plan (IRP) for the electricity sector.
This important event is owned and organised by SANEA which seeks to stimulate original thought and catalyse the transformation of the energy sector.
The South African government recently invited public comment on the 2016 Draft IRP. The window for public comment is open until the end of March 2017. It is important for interested persons to make themselves fully conversant of the issues and opportunities to equip themselves to make informed comment on this vital planning document.
The proposed primary energy mix remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels, as it has been for almost a century. This is very controversial and we pose the question of whether the time is right to re-boot the system and install “Energy Mix 2.0”?
In considering this question, the discussion forum will seek to refresh thinking about an appropriate energy mix in a context of new realities.
The SANEA Action for Energy event is unique in that it is not a conference or exhibition.
The main aim of the event is to facilitate debate and discussion with particular focus on the potential for fundamental shift in the primary energy mix of the electricity supply industry.
South Africa is at a point where important decisions need to be made about the future installed capacity of the electricity supply industry. The IRP, once promulgated, will shape the development of the electricity sector for years hence. There are some in the country who are of the opinion that we may already have too much capacity. There are others that believe the opposite. What most agree on is that energy supply must precede demand in order to stimulate growth. Equally important are economic cost efficiency and grid dispatch efficiency, enhanced by an optimal supply demand balance.
Decisions made over the next few months and years will set the framework for our future electricity supply systems. This is the time for bold and innovative ideas to be presented and debated so that we collectively ensure that the future electricity supply systems enable a prosperous South Africa.
