Eskom celebrates 95 years

Phakamani Hadebe

Eskom celebrated its 95th anniversary on 1 March 2018. Commenting on the Eskom’s journey of contributing to the growth and development of the people of South Africa and its economy, Eskom’s Interim Group Chief Executive, Phakamani Hadebe said that the power utility is proud of its achievements over the years, including the electrification of 100 380 households over the past six months. Through an electrification programme which commenced in 1990, the power utility has connected more than 5-million households to the electricity grid.

National Treasury has allocated R17,3-billion to Eskom and the municipalities to electrify a further 640 000 households over the next three years. It is hoped that universal access to electricity will be achieved in South Africa by 2025. According to Statistics South Africa, over 90% of South Africans have access to electricity, with most new customers now being electrified in more remote and deep rural areas.

Hadebe said that turning 95 is great milestone and a motivator for the power utility as it struggless through its liquidity and governance challenges. Eskom has a proud heritage of having people at the heart of the business whose history is deeply embedded in the history and the development of South Africa, Hadebe said.
