One of the largest lathes on the African continent has been installed at Marthinusen & Coutts’ power generation equipment repair facility in Benoni. The company plans to use and this acquisition to expand its service offering to its customers. This lathe gives the company the ability to offer the machining of very large rotors and other components of large electrical and mechanical rotating equipment in-house.
This lathe, which is driven by a 65 kW DC Motor, will grow the company’s capacity and service offering to its customers. The unit was purchased in Europe last year and underwent a substantial rebuild and modernisation to enable automated operation. This lathe has a 3,2 m swing and has the capacity to handle workpieces with a mass of up to 40 t and 10 m in length. The company, which is a member of the Actom group, has been successful with a number of large power-sector projects in recent times. The acquisition of this enormous lathe will help the company to grow further by enabling it to offer services it could not offer before. Click here to see the lathe in operation.
