Reliable power in the desert

Abu Dhabi-based Power Economy Middle East (PE) is a system integrator serving customers from the electric power and oil and gas industries. To ensure reliable SCADA monitoring and control of the new distribution substations in the harsh desert environment, PE chose Ethernet switches from the Siemens Ruggedcom portfolio. The switches were used to build new, fully automated distribution substations and upgrade existing ones with the latest technology.

This technology has improved network performance and reliability. The company was commissioned by an electric power supplier based in Oman, to build a series of new fully automated power distribution substations, and to modernise existing ones. The contractor faced a number of challenges, such as upgrading copper-based systems to fiberglass Ethernet networks, staying compliant with the IEC 61850 and IEC 61850-3 standards for high-speed data transmission, building a local area network for on-site monitoring of the substations, and providing SCADA connectivity, while operating in extremely harsh environmental conditions.
