Renewable energy success under threat

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) welcomes Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recognition of the success of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) at the World Economic Forum in Davos recently. The association says the contribution the private sector plays in bringing cost efficiencies into South Africa’s electricity supply industry is encouraging. The innovation shown by the renewable energy (RE) sector will assist in bringing tangible socio-economic benefits to South African residential, commercial and industrial users. However, the association says the RE industry and the gains that have been achieved are currently under threat from what it calls Eskom’s reckless behaviour and flagrant disregard of calls by the president and the minister of energy to support South Africa’s stated energy policy in recent months.
