Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane, the three metropolitan cities in Gauteng, produce a tremendous amount of waste. Gauteng has seen a high rate influx of residents searching for better opportunities. Coupled with the population growth, the amount of waste that these municipalities handle has increased significantly. It is with this background that the Siemens Southern and Eastern Africa PG Sales team headed by Mark Van Antwerp hosted a Waste2Energy workshop in collaboration with the Gauteng Infrastructure Funding Agency (GIFA) recently. Gauteng metros have about seven or eight years of landfill space left, and the company considers it important to lead the conversation on this important topic. A representative from the Department of Energy gave a keynote address at the event.
