How it works

Climate action you can trust with real local impact.

Credible Carbon allows businesses and individuals to reduce their carbon footprint through audited projects that tackle the twin challenge of climate change and poverty in South Africa.

Every credit you purchase represents one tonne of CO2 avoided or removed, independently audited and permanently retired in our registry.

Offsetting is the final step. First, reduce what you can. Then offset what you cannot avoid.

The basics

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting enables individuals and organisations to compensate for their greenhouse gas emissions by supporting projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount elsewhere. At Credible Carbon, that means investing in African projects that not only cut emissions but also create jobs, improve livelihoods, and protect the environment.

1 credit = 1 tCO2 When a credit is purchased and retired in our registry, it cannot be resold. Every retirement is permanent and traceable.
How the market works

The three components of carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting requires three parts to function:

Component 1

A project that reduces emissions

A project that reduces or avoids emissions in a measurable, auditable way, for example through recycling, renewable energy, or improved efficiency.

Component 2

A carbon registry

Credible Carbon acts as the registry, working with independent carbon auditors to confirm that claimed emission reductions are real and measurable, then recording those verified credits transparently.

Component 3

Buyers

Individuals or companies who purchase carbon credits and retire them. Retirement permanently removes a credit from circulation. That act of permanent removal is what makes it an offset.

Credit generation

How carbon credits are created

Every project claiming emission reductions undergoes independent verification by an approved auditor before any credits are issued.

Project
Reduces emissions in a measurable, documented way
Independent audit
Approved auditor verifies the claimed reductions on site
Registry
Verified reductions are converted to credits and listed publicly
Available to buy
Credits are available for purchase and retirement by buyers

If an audit fails, the project can rectify the issue and reaudit before any credits are issued.

How to offset your carbon through Credible Carbon

From estimating your footprint to receiving proof of your offset, the process is straightforward.

1
Estimate your emissions
Use our Carbon Calculator or your own activity data (travel, energy, logistics) to calculate your emissions in tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
2
Choose a project
Browse our projects to select where your contribution goes. Each has been independently audited and verified for both climate and social impact.
3
Purchase credits
Buy the equivalent number of credits to cover your emissions. Purchases can be made directly through the registry or by contacting us.
4
Retire, trade, or hold
Choose what to do with your credits. When credits are retired you receive a certificate confirming the permanent removal from circulation.
5
Report your offset
Use your retirement certificate in sustainability reports, marketing, or CSR disclosures to demonstrate verified, traceable climate action.
Who it is for

Getting started

The same process applies whether you are an individual, a business, or running an event.

Businesses

Operational emissions

  1. Measure operational emissions: energy, travel, logistics, waste.
  2. Reduce where possible through efficiency and waste minimisation.
  3. Offset remaining emissions by selecting a verified project.
  4. Retire, trade, or hold your credits.
Ideal for: companies seeking trusted, locally rooted climate action with measurable social benefit.
Individuals

Personal footprint

  1. Estimate your footprint using our calculator: flights, driving, electricity.
  2. Reduce what you can through everyday choices.
  3. Offset the rest by choosing a verified project that resonates with you.
  4. Retire, trade, or hold your credits.
Ideal for: travellers, households, students, and professionals who want measurable, community focused climate action.
Conferences and events

Event footprint

  1. Estimate your event footprint: travel, venue energy, catering, materials.
  2. Select a verified project aligned with your event's sustainability goals.
  3. Offset emissions by purchasing credits that reflect the scale of the event.
