Climate action you can trust — with real local impact

The Carbon Offsetting Process

Credible Carbon allows businesses and individuals to reduce their carbon footprint through audited projects that tackle the twin challenge of climate change and poverty in South Africa.

What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting enables individuals and organisations to compensate for their own greenhouse-gas emissions by supporting projects that reduce or remove an equivalent amount elsewhere.

At Credible Carbon, that means investing in South African projects that not only cut emissions but also create jobs, improve livelihoods, and protect the environment.

Each carbon credit = 1 tonne of CO2 avoided or removed.

When a credit is purchased and retired in our registry, it cannot be resold — ensuring full traceability and integrity.

Offsetting is the final step.
First, reduce what you can. Then offset what you can’t avoid.

The components of carbon offsetting

Credible Carbon allows businesses and individuals to reduce their carbon footprint through audited projects that tackle the twin challenge of climate change and poverty in South Africa.

Carbon offsetting requires three key parts to work effectively:

1. Source of Carbon Credits

A project that reduces or avoids emissions in a measurable, auditable way — for example, through recycling, renewable energy, or improved efficiency.

2. A Carbon Registry

Credible Carbon acts as the registry, confirming through independent carbon auditors that claimed emission reductions are real and measurable, then registering those verified credits transparently.

3. Buyers

Individuals or companies who wish to reduce their carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits and retiring them. Retirement ensures that each credit is permanently taken out of circulation — this is what’s known as offsetting.

Credible Carbon connects projects, auditors, and buyers to deliver real climate and social impact.

How carbon credits are created

Every project claiming emission reductions undergoes independent verification by approved auditors.

If the audit passes, those reductions are converted into carbon credits and recorded in the Credible Carbon Registry. If an audit fails, the project can rectify the issue and re-audit.
